Letter from the

Executive Director

Dear Members and Friends,

This year has been another year of exciting growth for the IRC. With more staff (we are now at two full-time and four part-time employees) we were able to provide more programs, education and advocacy in support of our mission. We thank YOU, our members, donors, sponsors and friends for your support which has allowed us to grow and do more good work in 2010 than ever before.

Highlights of 2010
The IRC successfully advocated for the release of $500,000 of the state’s recycling market development grants. This $500,000 investment in four companies across the state created more than 200 new green jobs and leveraged more than $9 million in new investment in Indiana all while helping to grow Indiana’s recycling and composting infrastructure. This investment will reap rewards for our economy and our environment for years to come.

We have also seen a successful first year for Indiana’s new electronics recycling law which the IRC championed in 2009. This year, manufacturers are set to safely recycle more than 22,000,000 lbs of toxic electronic waste collected from Hoosiers’ basements, garages and closets. This is a huge victory for our environment and we are thankful for your support – it was crucial to our success in passing this law.

In 2010, we had a record number of conference attendees and exhibitors who learned from each other and took new recycling resources, program ideas and much more back to their communities across Indiana. The IRC also hosted two workshops, one in conjunction with our new partner - the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns.

This year we also distributed more than 2,000 recycling bins to schools, churches, local governments and other organizations across the state thanks to a partnership with Alcoa. This program has provided new access to recycling for several thousand Hoosiers!

This fall, in celebration of America Recycles Day, more than 155 junior and high school students from across the state participated in our Curb Your Carbon Footprint educational video contest.

In addition to accomplishing all this important work, we hosted another successful fall fundraiser! It was a fun evening and a financial success and we thank everyone who helped make that possible. You can read more about the event below.

Please know that as we prepare for 2011, the IRC will continue to serve as Indiana’s voice for recycling. We will also continue to provide new and exciting programs that advance our mission – from delivering recycling bins to schools in need to educating civic leaders across Indiana about the economic and environmental benefits of creating a more sustainable materials economy.

We need Your Support Today!

As you think about the important work that we do, we hope that you will consider giving as generously as you can and remember that your donation is tax-deductible! In addition to general donations, you can give a gift membership in the IRC or shop at Global Gifts where a percentage of sales will go to the IRC. Details about both of these opportunities are below.

On behalf of the staff and board of the IRC, I thank you for your support in 2010, and wish you a holiday season full of love, family and friendship.

Kind regards,

Carey

Mobius Recap

More than 250 people attended the IRC’s second annual Mobius fundraiser for the Indiana Recycling Coalition. Guests were treated to a delicious meal featuring locally grown and organic foods as well as beverages, the screening of the winning videos from the IRC’s “Curb Your Carbon Footprint” video contest (click here to see them for yourself), and lots of recycled artwork.

Click here to view photos from the evening.

The evening would not have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors: Monarch Beverage Company, Republic Waste Services, Best Way Disposal, Strategic Materials, and Kroger. AND a big thank you to those who generously donated at the event — 2011 will be much brighter thanks to you!

Super Bowl Greencorps Member Organizes Recycling at Monumental Marathon

Slaney Neisen, a member of the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Green Corps and junior at Fishers High School, organized a recycling project at the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon.

Working with the IRC and Republic Services Inc., she and her team of volunteers collected plastic bottles and cans used by the race participants.

Neisen coordinated the recycling project as a member of the 1st & Green “Green Corps,” an initiative created by the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee. The initiative engages and empowers 176 high school students from across Indiana to become environmental leaders in their communities.

When asked why she is a member of the Green Corps, Neisen commented, “When I was nominated by my high school, I knew this was a big opportunity to get involved in my community. I’ve always been interested in volunteering and I have a big heart for the environment.”

Thank you, Slaney, for leading this impactful project!

Sponsor Spotlight: Alcoa

Alcoa has become the first aluminum company to receive Cradle to Cradle Certification for its primary aluminum.

Alcoa, with operations in more than 30 countries, has four manufacturing locations in Indiana with just over 3,000 employees in the Hoosier state — 2,000 of those are at Warrick Operations, located east of Evansville. The other locations are in Auburn, La Porte, and Lafayette.

The Cradle to Cradle Certification is an independent environmental certification process that assesses the total impact of a product on human health and the environment. The Cradle to Cradle concept was developed by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC), a global sustainability consulting and product certification firm.

Aluminum, unlike other materials, is infinitely recyclable and saves 95 percent of the energy needed to make new material. With its strength and light weight, aluminum is also the material of choice to address megatrends facing our globe, such as urbanization.

In considering Alcoa, MBDC looked at the process improvements Alcoa has made in the way it produces aluminum-from the reductions in energy use, deployment of efficient water management systems, and recycling.

Warrick Operations, with the largest primary aluminum smelter in the United States, recently received the Indiana Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. It was recognized for five years of continuous improvement, including a 95% reduction in emissions of sulfur dioxide, a 51% increase in recycling since 2005, and a 75% reduction in landfilled waste since 2000.

“By seeking out and utilizing innovative environmental practices, Alcoa has reduced waste, saved money and contributed greatly to Indiana’s environmental protection efforts, benefiting the health and welfare of the state’s communities,” said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly said in a prepared statement.

Alcoa locations are also working to help advance the corporation’s strategic goal to raise the rate of aluminum can recycling in North America to 75 percent by 2015.

<a name=”Letter from Executive Director”>Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Members and Friends,

We are thrilled to report that in August, the Recycling Market Development Board awarded $500,000 in grants to support Indiana’s recycling infrastructure. As you’ve read here in recent months, the IRC worked with several stakeholders, including Senators Breaux and Kenley, to secure the release of these previously-frozen funds. According to administration officials, this was a one-time release of $500,000, therefore we will continue to support the use of this fund which incentivizes new green jobs and a more sustainable environment for Indiana.

We are also excited to tell you about our upcoming fall fundraiser, Mobius - A Celebration of Recycling with the IRC on November 6. This will be a fun, elegant evening and we hope to see you there.

Finally, we recently kicked-off our America Recycles Day Jr/High School video contest. Please share this exciting opportunity with all of the middle & high school students and teachers you know and don’t forget to mention the cash prizes and awards ceremony! We are looking forward to once again tapping the talent and creativity of Hoosier students to convey an import environmental message - that recycling is one of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint.

Details about these new developments and much more is included below.
As always, thank you for your support as we continue the IRC’s important work to advance source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting activities in Indiana!

Carey Hamilton
Executive Director
