Friends,
As the month of May races to the finish line, we at the IRC are wrapping up a successful spring, which featured the 23rd annual conference and exhibition, a productive food waste compost dialogue, the election of new board members and the conclusion of the Alcoa Public Space Recycling Bin Grant Program (see article below).
23rd Annual Conference and Exhibition
Thanks to all of you who helped make this gathering a success! We were pleased to welcome new exhibitors such as Trex (recycled plastic) lumber, EcoSafe Zero Waste and Recycled Granite. A full list of exhibitors as well as conference photos and many of the terrific presentations can be found here. We were pleased with the positive response to several speakers, most notably the policy panel comprised of industry representatives during lunch on May 10. You can read an Indianapolis Business Journal article about that provocative discussion posted here.
We were also glad to once again present awards to winning Colleges and Universities who competed in RecycleMania. Information about that program and the 2012 competition is provided below.
New Board Members/Officers
We are thrilled to welcome to the following newly elected board members: Kira Blacketor, Jacob Cox, Tom Gray, Morgan Johnson, Michael Kaufmann, David Price, Julie Rizzo, Greg Spratt and Cassie Stockamp. Welcome also to the following board members who have been re-elected: Betty Cockrum (also elected Secretary), Deanna Dennison, Jim Parker (also elected President), Corrina Prather and Dean Schmuhl. Also elected to officer positions are Stacey Boggs (Vice President) and Kevin Corcoran (Treasurer). the full board list can be found here.
Compost Dialogue
As you may recall, the IRC hosted the first of a series of food waste compost stakeholder meetings last fall. The next meeting will be schedule soon. If you have not yet been involved and would like to receive information about the next meeting please email me @ [email protected].

RecycleMania
The 2012 RecycleMania competition has officially wrapped up! Indiana had 13 colleges and universities participate in this state-wide recycling competition. Purdue University in West Lafayette won four of the eight awards in the competition division, including the Grand Prize, Gorilla Prize, Waste Minimization and Food Service Organics. Taylor University won two awards, including Paper and Corrugated Cardboard. Butler University and the University of Notre Dame won one award each. The Bulldogs won the prize for Cans and Bottles, and the Fighting Irish won the Per Capita Classic.
For the second consecutive year, the IRC recognized all of the winners at a luncheon ceremony at the annual conference and exhibition. Dick Hamm, Director of Building Operations at Butler University, attended the IRC conference in 2011 and was motivated to win a RecycleMania award for the Bulldogs. “As attendees last year, we learned that the IRC was contributing to the efforts of the national RecycleMania program and was recognizing winners on a state level. Watching last year’s winners collect their awards and recognition fostered an even more competitive spirit on our campus to improve our recycling efforts. Our group very much appreciates the IRC and RecycleMania for assisting and recognizing educational facilities like ours to improve and promote our campus recycling programs,” stated Mr. Hamm.
The IRC will work to continue expanding this program in Indiana. If you are interested in learning more about the program contact [email protected].
Thank you to all who made the public space bin grant program a success!
As previously mentioned, our statewide public space bin grant program sponsored by the Alcoa foundation was a great success. The program reached over 40 venues in 29 counties. In Vanderburgh County, the bins were employed at Evansville’s newly-constructed, 10,000 seat Ford Center. Over five months of tracking, the Evansville-Vanderbugh County Building Authority recycled 40,000 pounds of beverage containers! The IRC is thrilled to play a part in implementing recycling at this beautiful new arena.
Congratulations to Evansville and the many other participants in this program. Thank you all for making it such a success! Although the grant is over, the need to recycle in public and private spaces continues. We challenge everyone to think before you throw!

Product Stewardship Institute’s Policies to Prevent Pharmaceutical Waste: Looking at Sample Waste
Monday, June 4th
1:00 - 2:00 p.m. ET
Some pharmaceutical companies offer samples of their branded medications to physicians and clinics to distribute to patients. Samples used by their expiry dates do not pose a waste problem and may even reduce waste by allowing patients to try a new medication that they receive in a small quantity before filling a full prescription.
Samples that expire onsite, however, must be managed as waste. This can be time consuming and expensive. In the worst cases, though this is not a common practice, pharmaceutical manufacturers have unloaded soon-to-expire samples onto clinics to avoid managing the drugs as waste. This webinar will explore potential opportunities to reduce sample waste.
