Position Description

Job Title:

Executive Director, Indiana Recycling Coalition (IRC)

 

A. Position Summary:

IRC is a growing, nonprofit organization that works to advance waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting in Indiana via projects, programs, public education and legislative advocacy.

 

The Executive Director provides the leadership, strategic direction, and management required to carry out the operations of the IRC. The Executive Director oversees policy initiatives, strategic planning and implementation, publications, marketing, grant writing/fundraising and project implementation. The ED is responsible for personnel management (including staff, contractors, and volunteers), fiscal management, representing the organization (to the public, press, elected officials, other nonprofits, and industry), and communication between the board of directors and staff. The Executive Director is expected to have deep knowledge of recycling issues including dynamics among key industry players, understanding of related policies at the state level as well as policies (generally) at the rural level and within major metropolitan areas.

 

The Executive Director is supervised by the Board of Directors.

 

B. Specific Responsibilities:

The Executive Director is responsible for:

a. General Management: Managing the day-to-day affairs of the IRC, including providing senior management oversight of all operations, budgets, finances, and personnel matters. Ensuring that the IRC is in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

 

b. Program/Project Design, Development and Implementation: Formulating and

recommending policies, plans, programs and budgets for consideration by the Board, as well as making day-to-day executive decisions necessary to accomplish the mission of the IRC. Overseeing all programs and projects.

 

c. Strategic Planning and Problem Solving: Identifying issues, opportunities, and challenges for the organization, and developing strategic plans, actions, or strategies addressing or responsive to those matters.

 

d. Fiscal Management and Fundraising: Managing the fiscal affairs of the organization, including developing and proposing, in conjunction with the Treasurer, an annual budget. Ensuring the financial integrity and sustainability of the organization. Also, primary staff responsible for fundraising, including sponsorship, individual donor and membership development; and identifying and securing grants for project and program funding and other funding opportunities as may be identified.

 

e. Public Relations and Marketing: Serving as a highly visible, credible, and informed spokesperson on behalf of the IRC at the local, state and national levels. This includes frequent outreach and promotion about timely IRC issues through publicity, outreach, website, newsletter, and presentations at relevant conferences and events. Serving as the primary liaison with the public, membership, press, elected officials, other nonprofits, industry, government agencies, and other organizations with an interest or stake in the work of the IRC.

 

f. Liaison to the Board of Directors: Compiles board packets, staffs all committees.

 

g. Other Duties as Necessary: Performing any other duties as required for the administration of the IRC.

C. Internal Reporting Relationships

a. The Executive Director reports to the IRC Board of Directors in carrying out the duties listed above, in accord with the strategic plan and budget approved by the Board of Directors.

b. The Executive Director keeps the Board of Directors informed of the operations of the IRC.

c. The staff of the IRC reports to the Executive Director.
