CITY ANNOUNCES PEDESTRIAN RECYCLING ON MONUMENT CIRCLE

20 Pedestrian Recycling Bins Placed Around Downtown Landmark and Surrounding Spokes

INDIANAPOLIS – The City of Indianapolis today highlighted recent additions to the City’s pedestrian recycling program on Monument Circle. The enhancements were made possible through a partnership with the Office of Sustainability, Nestle Waters North America, Indiana Recycling Coalition (IRC), and Keep America Beautiful.

“The pedestrian recycling initiative is a great example of the private-public partnerships the City of Indianapolis seeks to develop our sustainability efforts and improve quality of life for our residents,” said Mayor Greg Ballard. “The bins fill a need for street-level recycling, will reduce our environmental footprint and will help keep our city cleaner.”

The initiative brings 20 new recycling bins to be placed next to garbage cans throughout the circle and the surrounding “spokes.” The bins are easily recognizable to encourage use. Pedestrians will be able to recycle aluminum, plastic and glass. The recycle bins should only be used for the aforementioned items. Including trash can contaminate the recycle load so the City encourages everyone to be mindful and place only recyclable items in the bins. The Monument Circle recycling bins are in addition to pedestrian recycling bins already located in Broad Ripple Village and on Mass Ave.

”With approximately 30 percent of recyclable beverage containers consumed away from home, the IRC has made increasing access to public space recycling a priority,” said Carey Hamilton, the executive director of the IRC and board member of Keep America Beautiful. “The IRC is thrilled to facilitate this partnership between Nestle Waters North America, Keep America Beautiful, the IRC, and the City of Indianapolis so that attractive and effective recycling is available in the high-profile Monument Circle area.”
