An Indiana panel that distributes money to attract recycling industry jobs to the state awarded a combined $500,000 to four companies last week, its first grants since the state froze the funds in 2008 to help offset state revenue shortfalls.

The companies, which promise to create more than 200 new jobs, were chosen by the panel to “ensure a return for the citizens of Indiana” on the money, said Bruce Burrow, chairman of the Recycling Market and Development Board.

In December 2008, state officials indefinitely froze the board’s recycling promotion fund, which is sustained by fees trash haulers pay at Indiana’s landfills. Millions of dollars were later shifted from it to Indiana’s main checking account to help offset revenue shortfalls caused by the recession.
