INDIANAPOLIS - On September 17, the National Recycling Coalition (NRC) awarded the Indiana Recycling Coalition (IRC) its esteemed Outstanding Recycling Organization annual award at the Resource Recycling Conference in New Orleans.
“The Indiana Recycling Coalition was a unanimous selection by the judges. The depth and breadth of their activities and impact stood out, and provides a model for growing a state-wide voice for recycling,” stated Lisa Skumatz, NRC Board Member and Awards Committee Chair.
This award category recognized the state or other recycling organization with outstanding growth, programs, leadership, and/or contribution/impact in the field.
“The Indiana Recycling Coalition is honored to receive this prestigious award from the National Recycling Coalition. Thanks to the work of our board, staff, volunteers and countless community and business partners, we have experienced a period of significant growth,” said Carey Hamilton, executive director, Indiana Recycling Coalition. “As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, this recognition buoys us in our work to advance recycling in Indiana via education, programs and advocacy,” continued Hamilton.
The IRC’s recent accomplishments include successfully advocating for the state’s new 50% recycling goal, supporting implementation of large-scale public space recycling at events like the Super Bowl and the Indiana State Fair, providing recycling bins to sporting venues and parks across the state and delivering state-wide recycling education and resources. In 2013, the IRC commissioned a landmark recycling jobs study which demonstrated the close tie between increased recycling and economic growth. This study showed both the strong in-state demand for recyclable commodities from Indiana manufacturers and the opportunity to create 10,000 new jobs by increasing recycling 25% state-wide.
The IRC will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a gala on November 15 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Indianapolis. Details about that event can be found here.
