As has been done for the past several years, the IRC, and the Indiana Departments of Commerce and Environmental Management will co-sponsor a cooperative booth to educate about and promote recycling in Indiana. The theme for the 1998 booth will be Recycle Right!, which focuses on the complete recycling cycle and will tie-in with the workshops held on February 11.
In addition to the groups listed above, we have invited the major recyclable materials trade associations to participate in the booth. Each material will have a table to demonstrate the complete recycling cycle - including the collection of post-consumer materials, proper processing and quality control, re-manufacturing, and samples of new recycled-content products.
Other Indiana statewide recycling groups with related information will assist in staffing the booth during the show hours. These groups include the Association of Indiana Solid Waste Districts (AISWMD) and the Indiana Institute on Recycling.
On a complementary note, the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers (HASTI) will have their annual conference on the same days, in a different part of the Convention Center. Cathy Bastin, Education Coordinator of the West Central SWD and IRC member, is coordinating the IRC's booth at that conference.
The Nominations committee has begun their work to accept nominations and seek candidates for the Indiana Recycling Coalition's board of directors election coming up at the Annual Meeting during the IRC's Annual Conference on April 28 and 29.
The IRC's board of directors has historically been an active, working group of people representing a cross-section of the groups involved in the world of source reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, recycled material processing, manufacturing, and market development. Candidates seek office in several categories including government, business, not-for-profit, and at large. The number of vacancies in each category is determined separately, and a careful balance of representation is maintained.
To continue that history of activity and dedication, and invigorate it further, the committee is in the process of creating materials describing the expectations and qualifications sought in board members. It is not necessary to be a professional in the industry. Actually, many of the board members who have made great contributions to the vitality and health of the organization have been individuals who were dedicated to the IRC's goals, but worked in other industries or were not employed outside their homes.
Inspired by the National Recycling Coalition's standard "job description" for their board members, as well as their two statements of "duty", these materials are expected to encourage a greater number of individuals to realize that they are qualified and would be readily welcomed to the board. It has been a puzzling phenomenon to discover that many people who are dedicated to the principles of natural resource conservation, reduction of wasteful practices, recycling, organics and composting, and business management have felt an interest in serving on the board, but have never moved to nominate themselves or seek nomination because they felt they weren't the type of person the IRC was looking for.
A belief in and support of the previously stated principals, an interest in helping guide and enhance the IRC, and a willingness to devote some time beyond the monthly board meetings are all that is needed.
The committee expects to have a draft of applications and accompanying materials prepared by the end of January. Any who are interested in providing input into those documents, or serving on the committee, or would like to consider serving on the board, are encouraged to contact the committee chair, Laura M. Dellinger at 317/232-7658.
Nominations must be received by Friday, February 27, 1998. The awards will be presented in coordination with the Coalitions April 28-29, 1998 Annual Conference. For information or an application form, contact Leslie Krampf, at 317/232-8172 or visit the URL site at www.ai.org/idem/oppta.
