As a former public school art teacher, I often used solid waste when I had no money to buy conventional art supplies. About six years ago, it occurred to me that I could increase awareness of our shrinking landfill space and encourage recycling by teaching others my art/recycling techniques.
My message has been very effective. Some of my successes include receiving a grant to do a local art/recycling television series, and participating in the first Kids World Conference on the Environment held at the Nickelodeon Television Studios in Orlando in 1993. I taught children by recycling, and I displayed my solid waste sculpture, Trashasaurus Rex.
In October, MidLink Magazine, an award-winning electronic magazine, published "A Global Challenge: Help Save the Earth by Making ,Art." This year-long activity, which I designed, challenges kids all over the world to build solid waste sculptures out of the trash mound in their areas. Photos of the participants' work will be displayed in the magazine.
Last summer I expanded my "classroom" by creating a home page dedicated to teaching kids about art and recycling. Following is the URL address and a brief description of Marilyn's Imagination Factory: http://users.hsonline.net/kidatart/
This is a fun, educational site for kids, parents, and teachers. Learn recycling concepts through art and craft activities using solid waste as a source of free or inexpensive art materials. It features Trashasaurus Rex, a giant solid waste sculpture, and includes links to other art educational, and environmental sites.
You will find a fairly detailed description of how to build your own solid waste sculpture on my page under Lessons (Previous Activities). Look for the Trashasaurus Rex activity.
The MidLink project would be a good Earth Day activity for kids everywhere. Please feel free to publicize it in Indiana.
IRC again co-sponsored workshops at the Midwest Waste and Environmental Exposition, held February 26 and 27, along with the Indiana Depts. of Administration, Commerce and Environmental Management, Indiana Institute on Recycling, Indiana Pollution Prevention & Safe Materials Institute, and the Association of Indiana Solid Waste Management Districts.
This year's offerings included a morning workshop on some of India~na's Environmental Innovators and an afternoon session, entitled Making the Mo$t of Your Recyclables. Both sessions were well attended, with over 35 people in the morning and over 80 people in the afternoon.
The focus of the first workshop was a collection of presentations from a select group of firms in Indiana who were willing to share their environmental innovations with others. These innovations have allowed their firms to use less materials and save money and resources. Featured speakers included: Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center, Modine Midwest, Grote Industries, Madison Chemical, NACHI Technology, and Swiss Plywood.
Obtaining a high market value for recyclables was the focus of the second workshop offered by IRC. The workshop offered a panel discussion featuring representatives from various recycling industries. The speakers provided attendees insights into preparing recyclable materials for market. The workshop provided a toolkit of information on quality control to assist recyclers in increased marketability and decreased, available now from the IRC for only $10 (call 283-6226 to order).
The IRC was again a co-sponsor of the booth, "A Model Company, Inc." The booth provided a walk through of a model company that utilized waste minimization and recycling efforts. The display offered ideas, displays, and technical assistance.
