FALL INTO RECYCLING

The end of summer brings much to celebrate, look forward to at the IRC

Dear Friends,

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words….

From these few photos I hope you will get a sense of the scale and impact of our summer 2013 recycling initiatives!

Dig IN - a Taste of Indiana Food Fest -
Zero Waste System provided by IRC
IRC K-12 Recycling Bin Grant Program -
Bins (provided by Eli Lilly) ready for delivery to South Bend K-12 schools
Volunteers from Cummins educate fair-goers about the importance of recycling
State Fair - New Recycling bins and public eduction provided by IRC, KAB and the Alcoa Foundation
In addition to expanding our recycling programs and outreach efforts, we have been gearing up for the 2014 legislative session, working to increase participation in Recycle-Bowl (a national K-12 recycling competition), planning an extraordinary REVENT (our fall gala) and working to build the impact of America Recycles Day, November 15.

We have also recently welcomed a new staff person, Jean Miller, Director of Administration. Many of you have worked with Jean who has done a fantastic job helping us plan and deliver our most recent events as well as the YP phone book recycling challenge. We are thrilled to have Jean on the IRC team in a new position that creates a more strategic and impactful staffing structure.

We are, today more than ever, excited about the opportunities that lie ahead to grow our ability to serve our mission, and we thank you for that. The IRC exists because of you - our members, friends, volunteers, sponsors and grantors. Thank you for your support of the IRC.

Sustainably Yours,

Carey

Carey Hamilton

Executive Director

NOVEMBER 2, 2013, AT BIG CAR’S SERVICE CENTER
We hope to see you at REVENT, the IRC’s annual gala. On Saturday, November 2, we will celebrate the year that was in the world of reduction, reuse, composting and recycling at Big Car’s Service Center, a creative reuse story in its own right. Join us for a delicious dinner from Duos, drinks courtesy of Monarch Beverage, our famous silent auction/cocktail hour and far more as we look forward to 2014.

K-12 RECYCLING COMPETITION READY FOR KICK OFF!
Recycle-Bowl, Keep America Beautiful’s National K-12 Recycling Competition is back and ready for registration! We here at IRC know that getting young people educated and excited about recycling is one of the most powerful ways to create life-long recyclers. We hope to help spur the establishment of new recycling programs and increase recycling rates for existing programs through the promotion of this exciting competition! Champions can receive cash prizes, not to mention bragging rights! Help Indiana defend our title as national recycling champions (last year Taylor Primary in Kokomo recycled 47 pounds of waste per student)! Contact Annie at [email protected] or visit this website to find out more!

STATE FAIR
The first-ever comprehensive recycling program at the Indiana State Fair was a huge success. We spoke to thousands of fair goers about recycling, conducted observational research and most importantly collected lots of material. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our volunteers, Cummins and Keep America Beautiful. Thanks!
DIG IN
We were thrilled to help Dig-IN strive for zero waste at this year’s event. A huge thanks to our volunteers, Cummins and Green With Indy for making this initiative possible. We look forward to continuing our efforts to green the event in 2014.
AMERICA RECYCLES DAY
One day to educate. One day to motivate. One day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year. Get Involved!

WHERE TO RECYCLE

Our popular recycling finder tool, EcoPoint, has moved! It is now housed on our main website, indianarecycling.org/ecopoint/. It still has all the features you know and love but is now conveniently hosted with the rest of the information you crave about recycling in Indiana.

10 SURPRISE RECYCLABLES

As we all know, there is a lot of stuff in this world. With the amount of various materials come the inevitable questions of recyclability. Here now are 10 common items you may not know are recyclable, including golf balls, cotton swabs and hair. Yes, hair.
