LIVE Understanding Environmental Racism

A session by Paula Brooks and Tim Darst
Hoosier Environmental Council & Passionist Earth & Spirit Center

Speaker expertise

Paula is the Environmental Justice Coordinator at the Hoosier Environmental Council, where she leads the Indianapolis Environmental Justice Initiative.

Recent events in the US have increased global awareness of systemic racism and elevated the discussion about the disproportionate negative social, economic, and environmental impacts on communities of color. This phenomenon is known as environmental racism and is caused by a multitude of institutions and industries. The waste and recycling industry has a sordid history of perpetrating environmental racism. Therefore, environmental justice must play a critical role in addressing and preventing the harm from environmental racism. This session aims to introduce the topic of environmental racism and facilitate the awareness and actions needed to dismantle it.

Addressing the topic of environmental racism at our Conference every year is part of the IRC's committment to using our platform to elevate marginalized voices and be an agent of lasting change for the intersecting issues of systemic racism and the environment.
