Shop thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets and used book stores.

Buy used cars, computers, appliances and equipment, not new.

Rather than buy books, CDs and videos, borrow from your local library.

Choose "No Receipt" at the self-service gas pump. Use a notepad to record your gas purchases.

Buy scoops of ice cream in a cone, not a cup. Yum!

When buying clothing, ask the clerk to not wrap it in tissue paper.

more tips

  • Do research before purchasing major appliances. Buy durable, energy-efficient models that can be repaired.
  • Select products with long warranty periods, since they tend to be more durable. If they do require repair, the cost will be covered.
  • Ask that small purchases not be put in a bag.
  • Buy items that can be repaired and upgraded, or that can perform multiple functions.
  • Avoid purchasing electronic items that will soon become obsolete because of technological advances. Select those that can be upgraded.
  • Shop thrift and second-hand stores, as well as at garage and yard sales.
