The Indiana Recycling Coalition’s Student Scholarship Program: Presented by Midwest Bale Ties and Monarch Beverage, addresses the need to convene Indiana college students around topics related to the circular economy and provides an opportunity for these students to connect to each other and professionals in the waste, recycling and related industries and explore careers in the field by providing registration to attend the IRC’s 2020 Virtual Conference.
Over the course of the five-day virtual event, Student Scholarship recipients experience valuable, high-level speakers, panels and presentations to expand their waste management knowledge, several networking opportunities to expand their professional network, and exposure to individuals from a wide range of sectors and position types to assist them in determining a career path.
Beginning early in the spring semester, students are nominated by their professors, advisors, current/past employers, or mentors. Scholarship recipients are selected based on degree program pursued or demonstrated interest in sustainability-related fields, GPA, and sponsorship funding available. If you are interested in applying or nominating a student, contact Dylan Patterson at [email protected].

A special feature of the 2020 Virtual Conference is the LIVE Glass Recycling Summit, which will be held on Thursday, June 11 at 3:30-5:30pm EDT. This event is co-hosted by the Glass Recycling Coalition and co-sponsored by the Glass Packaging Institute and Strategic Materials, Inc. This event will bring together experts in glass recycling representing glass processors, recycling haulers and material recovery facility (MRF) operators, glass manufacturers including packaging and fiberglass, and policy advocates at the national, state, and local level. Speakers include representatives from the Indiana Recycling Coalition, the Glass Recycling Coalition, the Glass Packaging Institute, Strategic Materials, Inc., and Rumpke Waste & Recycling.
The IRC looks to our industry and policy partners for their perspectives and best practices ideas as we lead the effort to address curbside recycling in Indianapolis via the Indianapolis Circular Economy Initiative (ICEI) - and leverage those efforts for statewide investments in infrastructure. Our goals for this event are to convene all glass recycling stakeholders to discuss:
- Existing state of infrastructure, policies, and end markets;
- Challenges and unique circumstances for urban and rural areas;
- Opportunities for infrastructure, collaboration, incentives, and policies at local and state level;
- Useful case studies and best practices from around the US;
- Consensus for needs and goals to dramatically improve Indiana’s glass recycling; and
- Clarity on next steps, roles and responsibilities.
The summit concludes with a Virtual Networking Session on the remo.co platform, where attendees can continue the conversation with speakers and network with each other!
