Awesome Glass Recycling News!

We’ve got two exciting announcements in the world of glass recycling!

First, the Green Broad Ripple Restaurant Group expanded its glass recycling to include a whopping 14 bars and restaurants that are now recycling their glass. Bins for each restaurant were donated by Saint-Gobain Containers (SGC) and roll-off recycling containers were donated by Strategic Materials. The glass will be collected and sorted by color, and Saint-Gobain, which has a production facility in Dunkirk, will melt and mold the glass into new bottles. This fantastic news is due, in very large part, to IRC supermember and Union Jack’s part-owner Brenda Rising-Moore. Congratulations and thank you Brenda!

Second, Saint-Gobain recently unveiled its new and improved Captain Cullet website, which is dedicated to education about and promotion of glass recycling. On the site (www.captaincullet.com), parents, teachers and kids can find fun and informative material about glass recycling including virtual teachers, videos and games to download.

IRC Road Re-Port

This month the IRC was represented at, among others, three particularly fabulous events:

- The Senator Lugar Children’s Museum Energy Summit, where we talked with kids about how recycling reduces their carbon footprints, things they can reuse and recyle, and the video contest. We also talked to Senator Lugar about the IRC’s work and our “Curb Your Carbon Footprint” campaign.

- The ROCI Swap Meet, where we toured the Bartholomew County landfill and SWMD offices, including the Little Red Schoolhouse, and guests had the opportunity to swap their goods so EVERYTHING can be used and reused by whoever needs it!

- Muncie’s Living Lightly Fair, where we talked with school officials and parents about the video contest, and with citizens who wanted to know, “Does all the stuff we put in the blue bags REALLY get recycled?” (we were able to report that we actually SAW the MRF in action and yes, the blue bags’ contents really get recycled!). The event was attended by a slew of people and was organized, fun, informative and yes, it included recycling!

America Recycles Day

More than a celebration, America Recycles Day (ARD) is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling programs in the United States. One day to inform and educate. One day to get our neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together. One day to make recycling bigger and better-365 days a year.

Celebrate by attending an ARD event or by organizing your own event! It doesn’t have to be big, but it can be. Click here to find out more about ARD and to post your event. Large Line Break

Habitat for Humanity ReStores Divert Tons from Indiana Landfills

Habitat for Humanity is well known for its house building ministry but it is also making a significant contribution to the recycling and reuse community through its ReStores. Habitat ReStores are popping up in communities around the state as a means for fundraising for Habitat and a way to divert materials from landfills through reuse.

The ReStore is a place where people can donate used or new building materials and household items. Habitat takes toilets, cabinets, doors, sinks, and appliances that are then resold with the profits used to help Habitat build more homes. Originally, Habitat started this effort as a fundraiser, but has begun promoting recycling and reuse in the communities where they operate. In the last year, the 17 Habitat ReStore locations in Indiana diverted more than 250,000 tons of material from landfills. In addition, they recycled tons of metals. These ReStores are an excellent resource in your community for partnerships. Habitat could work with your agency or group to promote Earth Day, recycling initiatives, or provide an additional location for a hazardous waste disposal site. Habitat is excited to partner with the Indiana Recycling Coalition and the local Solid Waste Management Districts by working together at state conferences and sharing ideas. To find out more about the ReStores and where they are located, visit www.habitatindiana.org and click on the “find a ReStore” button. You can also give your local ReStore a call to discuss ways you can work together to help build a cleaner and greener state!

<a name=”Letter from Executive Director”>Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Members and Friends,

We are thrilled to report that in August, the Recycling Market Development Board awarded $500,000 in grants to support Indiana’s recycling infrastructure. As you’ve read here in recent months, the IRC worked with several stakeholders, including Senators Breaux and Kenley, to secure the release of these previously-frozen funds. According to administration officials, this was a one-time release of $500,000, therefore we will continue to support the use of this fund which incentivizes new green jobs and a more sustainable environment for Indiana.

We are also excited to tell you about our upcoming fall fundraiser, Mobius - A Celebration of Recycling with the IRC on November 6. This will be a fun, elegant evening and we hope to see you there.

Finally, we recently kicked-off our America Recycles Day Jr/High School video contest. Please share this exciting opportunity with all of the middle & high school students and teachers you know and don’t forget to mention the cash prizes and awards ceremony! We are looking forward to once again tapping the talent and creativity of Hoosier students to convey an import environmental message - that recycling is one of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint.

Details about these new developments and much more is included below.
As always, thank you for your support as we continue the IRC’s important work to advance source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting activities in Indiana!

Carey Hamilton
Executive Director
