I am excited to share several recent changes at the IRC!
We’ve been busy (to say the least) moving into a new office, developing a new logo, new website and new newsletter, as well as hiring new staff!
These changes have been in the works for many months and I want to thank the IRC board of Directors for their support and facilitation of this important and dynamic set of changes.
I am confident that the new professional and up-to-date face of the IRC along with expanded resources - new staff and office space - will allow us to accomplish more in the service of our mission than ever before.

REVENT: Celebrate & Support the IRC
|
|
Our annual fall gala/fundraiser, REVENT, is right around the corner! Join us on Saturday, November 17, at the Harrison Center for the Arts in Indianapolis as we celebrate the accomplishments of 2012 and look forward to the new year.
The evening will feature local and organic food, drinks courtesy of Monarch Beverage, an art-and-entertainment-filled silent auction, plus much more. In addition, our celebrate EmCee this year, Abdul Hakim-Shabazz, is sure to entertain.
Tickets are $70 for members, $90 for non-members, $30 for students. Tables of 10 are $650. More information here.

Recycling Policy Industry Stakeholder Dialogue
In March of this year the IRC launched an industry dialog - bringing together manufacturers, the waste management industry, beverage distributors, brand owners and several trade associations to discuss policy options to advance recycling in Indiana.
Why do these stakeholders care about recycling? For starters, the waste management industry provides a wide range of recycling services across Indiana and they’ve invested millions of dollars in recycling infrastructure to date. Indiana’s manufacturers of glass, aluminum, insulation and plastic (among others) are keenly interested in securing more recycled material from Indiana’s residents and businesses. Beverage companies including Coke and Nestle Waters have set ambitious recycled content goals for their packaging and as such, have a stake in this dialogue as well.
The IRC has now hosted four meetings of this group and we are pleased that these stakeholders have come together in support of fully reinstating Indiana’s Recycling Fund which was suspended in January 2009, due to the State’s economic crisis at that time. This impressive and diverse business group sent a letter (here) to Governor Daniels and a similar letter to all Gubernatorial candidates in September asking for their support of reinstating the recycling fund. Governor Daniels deferred to the next Governor. Candidate Gregg supports fully reinstating the fund and Candidate Pence has not responded. Candidate Boneham did not reply to a request for an email address to send the request. We look forward to working with the next Governor, whomever he shall be, on this important issue.
Finally, earlier this month, the IRC made the economic case for investing in recycling alongside representatives from the glass and aluminum industries in front of the Environmental Quality Service Council - Indiana’s environmental legislative study committee. A summary of that hearing was published last week in Resource Recycling.

Food Waste Compost Stakeholder Dialogue
In September the IRC hosted a third Food Waste Compost Stakeholder meeting and we were thrilled, once again, with the great turnout and interest from a wide range of interested parties.
The two main deliverables following this meeting were to: 1) Work with SustainIndy to identify a food waste compost pilot project.
2) Facilitate communication/comments between IDEM and our food waste stakeholder group regarding food waste compost rule making.
It seems clear that these stakeholder meetings have helped inform the important work that IDEM is doing to craft rules that will be least burdensome to a wide range of compost needs (from neighborhood to commercial scale). America Recycles Day
Since 1997, communities across the country have come together on November 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day. It is one day to educate and motivate. One day to get our neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together. Let’s work together to make recycling bigger and better in 2012!

K-12 Recycling Efforts to Expand!
Thanks to a generous grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, the IRC has hired Annie Hostetter to help grow K-12 recycling in central Indiana. Annie brings experience in the non-profit sector and a passion for the IRC mission. She received her bachelor’s degree in environmental politics and policy and is expected to receive her master’s degree next month in sustainable community development. | Project ReDirectory Kicks off in the Indianapolis area! |
The fifth annual YP Project ReDirectory® phone book recycling program serving the greater Indianapolis area kicked off on Thursday, October 18, with 14 schools vying for cash prizes totaling $2,250.
Nearly 57 tons of directories were collected last year with Greenbriar Elementary School taking home the top prize of $650 while collecting 9.92 tons. In addition to collection areas at the various schools there are three drop-off locations, so there is plenty of opportunity for recycling the collected directories.
The Indiana Recycling Coalition is coordinating this year’s phone book recycling program by joining forces with Republic Waste Services & Recycling of Indiana and YP to recycle old directories as the new Indianapolis YP Real Yellow PagesSM directories are delivered throughout the area.

Learn how office equipment, including imaging equipment and computers, can be sustainably purchased and managed throughout their lifecycle to conserve energy, avoid greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce solid and hazardous waste.
Any state, regional or local government agency, tribal government, or school, college or university can participate in the State Electronics Challenge. The Challenge is a free program that provides technical assistance and implementation tools, as well as individualized sustainability reports documenting material and energy savings. Participants also can get recognition for their efforts through the Challenge awards program.
Who should be interested in the webinar: IT, sustainability/environment, recycling, and procurement staff within state, tribal, regional and local government; and schools, colleges, and universities.
