Recycles Day is environmental history in the making! Aimed at increasing
consumer purchases of recycled-content products, America Recycles Day focuses
nationwide media attention and public support on recycling and waste reduction.
The 2000 slogan, "For our children's future, buy recycled today," reminds
consumers of recycling's importance.
In Indiana and across the nation, people will be participating in

Press ReleasesDecember 21, 1999 Americans are recycling more than ever, and Indiana residents are no exception. This year, more than 11,500 people in Indiana pledged to recycle and buy recycled products for the annual America Recycles Day celebration. Beginning with the kickoff event in downtown Indianapolis, more than 160 events were held across the state to emphasize this year's America Recycles Day theme--"For our children's future, buy recycled today." Students joined the celebration this year, writing essays and designing posters with the buy recycled theme. The grand prize winner for the poster contest was Carolyn Taylor, a sixth grader at Nashville Elementary School in Nashville, IN. Carolyn's poster featured a variety of recycled-content products and how they benefit the environment. Her poster will be displayed on a billboard in her hometown and in downtown Indianapolis. For her winning design, Carolyn will receive a bike, and her school will be awarded a papermaking kit, recycled-content pencils, recycled paper, and a plastic lumber picnic table. There were four runners up in the poster contest. Jessica Johnson, Stacy Riddle, Keva Milligan and Brad Phipps are all in grade six at Throop Elementary in Paoli, IN. Along with the winner's, their designs will be made into one America Recycles Day: Indiana poster which will be available to Indiana schools in February. In the essay contest, high school students described why they purchase recycled-content products. Kristen Gibson, a ninth grader at North Newton Jr./Sr. High School in Morocco, IN, was awarded the grand prize--a personal computer, monitor and printer, as well as a papermaking kit, recycled-content pencils and paper, and a plastic lumber picnic table for her school. Her essay, which emphasizes how buying recycled-content products promotes the recycling process, will be published in the Indiana Recycling Coalition newsletter. Kristen's winning essay is published here. The runners up included North Newton students Sarah Blaney, grade 11; Justin Dyer, grade 12; and Kassie Koselke, grade 9, as well as Jac-Cen-Del Jr./Sr. High School student Josh Wagner, grade 9. Smurfit Stone Recycling Company, Paper Trail Recycling, Goldsmith Group, Rehab Resources, and Tri-State Resources were the official sponsors of the poster and essay contests.. Other America Recycles Day events included pledge card drives, educational seminars, school assemblies, buy recycled workshops for purchasing agents, and state prize drawings for 24 recycled-content gift packages.
