Indianapolis, IN, It’s that time of year when leaves begin to turn and fall, and when area schools begin collecting old telephone directories in the annual YP Project ReDirectory® recycling program sponsored by the Indiana Recycling Coalition.
The fifth annual YP Project ReDirectory® phone book recycling program kicks off today with 14 schools vying for cash prizes totaling $2,250.
Nearly 57 tons of directories were collected last year with Greenbriar Elementary School taking home the top prize of $650 while collecting 9.92 tons. In addition to collection areas at the various schools there are three drop-off locations, so there is plenty of opportunity for recycling the collected directories.
“Our students had such a great time collecting directories last year, and I know they’re eager to defend their title,” said Kathy Robbins, Greenbriar Elementary teacher. “We’re looking forward to the competition again this year. Greenbriar Elementary is ready to do what we can to win and to help improve our environment.”
The Indiana Recycling Coalition is coordinating this year’s phone book recycling program by joining forces with Republic Waste Services & Recycling of Indiana and YP to recycle old directories as the new Indianapolis YP Real Yellow PagesSM directories are delivered throughout the area.
“We are pleased to have the opportunity to help provide this recycling opportunity each year,” said Carey Hamilton, executive director, Indiana Recycling Coalition. “The students and the entire community get excited about this program, and it’s easy to understand why. It’s fun, it’s rewarding, it’s educational, and it helps to build a culture of sustainability within the Indianapolis area.”
“The IRC is also pleased to educate the public about how to opt out of receiving the phone book for those residents and businesses who no longer require them, thus helping to reduce first and then recycle this part of the waste stream,” Hamilton added.

Residents who wish to limit or stop delivery of directories should visit www.YellowPagesOptOut.com or call 1-866-329-7118 to submit their requests to stop the future delivery of directories from all directory publishers. Residents should note that requests take several weeks to process, so there is the possibility that changes in delivery preferences for directories approaching or currently in distribution may not be reflected until the next directory delivery cycle. The site is free and information provided through the site will not be shared with anyone other than directory publishers for the purpose of updating distribution lists.
YP Real Yellow PagesSM directories are made from recycled paper waste and wood fiber waste such as sawdust and wood chips left over from lumber processing operations.
